The Lovers
6 x 30’ for Sky
Acclaimed playwright, David Ireland's first television series The Lovers is an anarchic romcom about two people who appear to be utterly wrong for each other - yet may just be utterly right.
Seamus O’Hannigan, (Johnny Flynn) is a suave, sophisticated and somewhat famous political broadcaster from London with a beautiful, film star girlfriend, (Alice Eve) and a golden future. Janet Dunlop (Roisin Gallagher) is a sweary supermarket worker from Belfast with an exasperated boss (Conleth Hill), and a death-wish.
When Seamus unexpectedly drops into Janet’s world (literally over the wall and into her backyard) they instantly clash. About everything: Seamus is English, Janet doesn't like English people. Janet believes in God, Seamus is an atheist. Seamus thinks reality TV is for idiots, Janet loves reality TV and thinks politics is for idiots. Seamus loves his life and thinks he has it all, Janet hates her life and wants to end it all.
Janet and Seamus are the oddest of Odd Couples.
The Lovers is a show about two broken people who find each other and become whole.
Directed by award-winning director Justin Martin (Prima Facie) for Sky Atlantic and Sundance.
