THE HONOURABLE WOMAN
8 x 60’ for BBC Two / Netflix
Drama Republic’s first original production was the multi-award winning international thriller, The Honourable Woman, produced alongside Eight Rooks. Written, directed and produced by BAFTA award winner Hugo Blick, The Honourable Woman is a fast-paced thriller set against an international backdrop.
As a young girl, Nessa Stein (Maggie Gyllenhaal) witnessed the assassination of her father by the armed wing of the PLO. Now in her late thirties, Nessa is at the forefront of the Middle East peace process. She has worked tirelessly to help cultivate an atmosphere of reconciliation between the Israelis and Palestinians, even being ennobled for her campaigning work.
But now the newly made Baroness must fight forces conspiring against her. A Palestinian businessman is killed after being awarded a highly lucrative contract by the Stein Group, and Nessa and her brother Ephra (Andrew Buchan) immediately come under the renewed close scrutiny of Whitehall and the Secret Intelligence Service.
Set against the gripping backdrop of government paranoia and espionage The Honourable Woman tells the story of one woman’s personal journey to right the wrongs conducted in a past life. From the corridors of governmental power to the sibling dynamic that bonds the Stein family, from Whitehall and MI6, Washington and the CIA, through to The Palestinian Authority and a Gaza safe-house – the rich complexity of Blick’s drama is completely enthralling.
The show has subsequently gone on to achieve significant awards recognition, including from the Golden Globes, BAFTA, the Royal Television Society, the British Press Guild, the South Bank Sky Arts Awards and the Peabody Awards.
